CHARLES CITY — The Comet boys and girls bowling squads are both 2-0 for the season.

But even though the early roll out has been relatively smooth, Charles City head coach Doug Bohlen anticipates some bumps in the road in the near future.

“We go out to West Union next Friday,” Bohlen said of the Dec. 8 meet versus North Fayette Valley at Lilac Lanes.

“That’s an old house, and old houses like that are hard to score on,” Bohlen said. “Our girls averaged better than 180 today. Over there, it will be hard to average 160.

“When you bowl on low-scoring conditions, it comes down to picking up spares. And that’s what we’re going to be working on.”

While hosting Denver at Comet Bowl on Dec. 1, the Comets swept the Cyclones while winning both the boys and girls varsity matches as well as the boys and girls junior varsity matches.

In the boys varsity match, Charles City won 2,801 to 2,165 with senior left-hander Kaleb Ross leading the way with a two-game individual series of 458. In Game 1 of the individual round, the Comets rolled four 200-plus games complements of Ross (224), Hunter Brockney (223), Kale Ross (205) and Nathan Shultz.

The Comets also combined efforts to bowl a 201 in the first Baker Game.

Charles City’s girls varsity team won 2,702 to 1,609.

The Comets were led by Falyn Knecht, who fired a career-high two-game series of 409, which included a 239 game — the highest score achieved by any high school bowler that night at Comet Bowl.

“Falyn has a great follow-through,” Bohlen said of his senior. “I wish all my bowlers could have a follow-through like Falyn’s.”

Charles City junior Madison Ross had a 379 series, and Comet senior and 2016 state individual champion Macy Ross bounced back from a 158 in her first individual game to shoot at 207 in the second.

In the boys junior varsity match, the Comets won 2,207 to 1,559. Nickolas Roney fired a two-game series of 384 (204, 180) to lead Charles City..

In the girls junior varsity match, the Comets won 2,316 to 1,672. Freshman Joslyn Cotton led the Comet JV with a 350 (161, 189) two-game series.
