Comet wrestlers fall to No. 10-ranked Go-Hawks, 65-12

CHARLES CITY — The Charles City wrestling team held its home-opener on Thursday.
But while hosting Northeast Iowa Conference foe Waverly-Shell Rock, the Comets had the door open for an inevitable Go-Hawks dual victory as they spotted them four open weight class forfeits.
Ranked No. 10 in Class 3A by The Predicament wrestling website and having four state-qualifiers back from last season, the Go-Hawks would have been tough to beat anyway, and they showed that by winning the first three varsity matches of the evening by fall.
It wasn’t until Comet 220-pound senior Josh Halligan pinned Darin Whiteside a half of minute into their bout where the home crowd got the lift they were waiting for.
Though the Go-Hawks would go on to win, 65-12, Charles City finished the meet on a positive note with the best match of the night — the 160-pound battle between WSR junior Jacob Herrmann and Charles City’s lone returning state qualifier Dylan Koresh.
Herrmann opened the scoring with a takedown before a reversal by Koresh tied the match at 2 going into the second period. Koresh then went up 4-2 with a takedown before Herrmann escaped to pull within 1.
The matched remained close in the third period with both wrestlers in the standing position and Koresh nursing a 6-5 lead. Koresh recorded his third takedown of the match with 30 remaining in regulation and managed to ride Herrmann out for a 8-5 decision.
Charles City sophomore Bronson Forsyth decisioned Brady Benning 4-1 in their 113-pound match.
Most of the Go-Hawks’ victories came way of fall.
Junior Dylan Albrecht, who placed sixth last year at state, stopped Comet freshman Alec Staudt 3:17 into their 120-pound match.
Dalton Woodyard, another returning WSR state qualifier, pinned Comet sophomore Elliott Sinnwell 1:15 into their 152-pound match.
Go-Hawk 170-pounder Gavin Wedemeier started the varsity meet by pinning Ciana Sonberg in 5:39.
Other WSR fall victories included Andrew Snyder over Tylor Zuspan (HWT. 2:23), Brayden Wolf over Sam Niichel (195 3:37), and Bryson Hervol over Jack Sindlinger (182 3:31).
One of those “It ain’t over until it’s over” parables nearly played out in the 145-pound bout that pitted Go-Hawk Dalton Rinnels against Comet freshman Roush Jaeger.
With the score tied at 2 after the first period, Rinnels began to take control while compiling back points for a 12-2 lead after two.
But in the third period with Rinnels starting in the down position, Jaeger was able to turn his shoulders for a near-fall … which you can say is always a near-victory.
Rinnels was able to recover and eventually earned a 19-4 technical fall win.
