CHARLES CITY — Saturday afternoon in a non-conference game against Osage, the Charles City Comets were in a zone.

Or rather they were not in a zone … at least on the defensive side of the floor.

Instead, the were playing a sticky man-to-man to where you thought they were wearing green uniforms.

As a result, the Class 3A No. 8-ranked Comets were able to take a 19-3 lead after one and a 34-13 lead after two on way to a 67-42 victory after four while claiming their 11th victory in a row.

Charles City junior guard Jack Molstead led all scorers with 22 points, much of which came from successful drives to the hole sprung by defender-tilting crossover dribbles.

The Comets hit five 3-point shots for the day — all of them from senior Noah Schlader who scored a personal season-high 19 points.

Schlader hit three of his treys in the first quarter while helping Charles City take control early.

Cade Hemesath had 8 points and Mike Cranshaw scored 6 as they respectively had about as many blocks and assists for Charles City.

For the Comets, it was a one-sided win against a good team that, frankly, didn’t play that bad. The Green Devils managed to work hard against the tenacious Comets to get a few good looks, but couldn’t get their shots to fall. Charles City’s rebounders did them no favors by making sure Osage got no second looks as the Green Devils struggled to find an offensive rhythm until the game was far out of reach.

Osage senior Drew Olson, who the year before torched the Comets for 39 points including the game-winning 3-point shot in a 67-66 final, was held to a team-leading 12 points — most of which came in the second half.

With a subsequent Monday game in Independence, the Comets have played three games in four days — something NBA teams don’t do anymore.

The grind apparently didn’t slow them down much as the Comets defeated Independence 66-55 for their 12th straight.

* In the girls game of the Saturday afternoon varsity doubleheader, Charles City ran into a buzzsaw when facing the undefeated Class 3A No. 5-ranked Green Devils.

Talk about double-figure scoring, Osage managed to place 13 players in the scoring column with Rylie Olson leading the way with 20 points while winning, 85-36, and improving to 13-0 for the season.

Kara Hoffman scored 8 points to lead the Comets (0-13).
