Press Staff Report

CHARLES CITY — The Charles City Comets have drawn Iowa Falls-Alden as their first-round opponent in the Class 3A Substate 2 boys basketball bracket released this week by the Iowa High School Athletic Association.

The Comets will host the Cadets at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 19. The winner advances to the semifinal at 7 p.m. Feb. 22 at Comet Gym where it will face the Webster City vs. Decorah winner.

Webster City and Decorah will play their first-round game at 6 p.m. Feb. 19 at Comet Gym.

The No. 7-ranked Comets were due to host Iowa Falls-Alden on Thursday for what would had been a regular-season “preview”, but the game was postponed with a makeup date yet to be announced.

The Comets (16-3) and Cadets (7-11) had two common opponents this season — Algona and Clear Lake. Charles City has beaten both of them in non-conference action; the Cadets have lost twice to Clear Lake and dropped the first of two regular-season games against Algona in North Central Conference play.

A pending “rubber-game” with Waverly-Shell Rock as the Comets and the Go-Hawks have split their Northeast Iowa Conference season series will only possibly be coming in the substate final, 7 p.m. Feb. 26 at Mason City.

The Go-Hawks will host Humboldt, 7:30 p.m. Feb. 19 in their first-round game; Clear Lake and Crestwood will square off in the other first-round game at W-SR, 6 p.m. Feb. 19.
