DES MOINES — Fortunes can change in a blink of an eye.

So can one’s general health and well-being.

In the Class 2A 152-pound opening-round bout featuring Justin McCunn of Red Oak and Dylan Koresh of Charles City during the first day of the State Wrestling Championships, Koresh seemed to be on the verge of recording an escape to break a 2-2 tie.

Charles City sophomore Jack Sindlinger gets the upper hand on Webster City's Zane Williams during their 170-pound consolation match, Thursday at Wells Fargo Arena. With a fall victory at the 2:45 mark, Sindlinger is still alive for a chance to achieve award-stand status.

It was late in the second period and the nearby Charles City cheering section was alive and kicking while sensing a Comet victory in the making.

Just before Koresh was about to break free, McCunn attained enough leverage to lift the Comet junior at the waist and slam him to the mat.

When Koresh opted for the down position to start the third period, he was visibly favoring his right shoulder, which had taken the brunt of the slam.

But the Comet junior and returning state qualifier managed to shake it off and record a reversal and two-point near-fall in the final 30 seconds. McCunn scored a reversal with several seconds remaining in regulation, but Koresh hung on for the 6-4 decision — his first state tournament victory.

Koresh (31-7) advances to the quarterfinals on Friday, which start at 9 a.m. for Class 2A and 3A. He will face South Tama County’s Isaac Judge, who recorded a first-period fall over Roberto Cardenas of Sioux Center.

Charles City 170-pound sophomore Jack Sindlinger also picked up his first state victory while surviving beyond the first day of his first state high school tournament.

Sindlinger gamely battled Jack Neuhaus of West Delaware in their opening-round bout before Neuhaus stuck him with 30 seconds left in regulation. Sindlinger was able to bounce back against Zane Williams of Webster City, pinning him 2:45 into their consolation match.

Sindlinger will face the loser of the quarterfinal match featuring Tucker Moore of West Burlington/Notre Dame/Danville and Kolton Bartow of Wahlert. The winner of that second-round consolation match will be guaranteed a spot on the top-eight awards stand.

Senior 220-pounder Josh Halligan was the third Comet wrestler who earned his trip to Des Moines. But suffering an early fall against Boone McDermott of Wahlert in the opening round and then getting stuck by Dakoda Powell of Spirit Lake Park in the consolation round, Halligan was eliminated from further competition and finished the season with a 29-15 record.

* Nashua-Plainfield senior Brock Dietz trained so hard for this wrestling season that he got a medal for it.
After placing in the Top 10 at the State Cross Country Championships, Dietz said that the main reason he went out for the sport was to get in better condition for wrestling.
In Class 1A first-round action at the State Wrestling Championships, Dietz managed to go the distance while finishing strong along the homestretch against Jose Flores of Sibley-Ocheyedan in their 106-pound match.
In the final 30 seconds of regulation, Dietz scored a takedown with his feet just inside the circle, the difference in a 7-5 decision.
Dietz (39-4) advances to Friday’s quarterfinals where he will face Cael Cassady of Martensdale-St. Mary’s
Dietz’s state-qualifying teammates, sophomore 113-pounder Jakob Whitinger and senior 195-pounder Nathan Dettmer, didn’t fare as well in their respective first-round matches.
Whitinger, who immediately followed Dietz on the same mat, seemed to ride a little Husky momentum as he scored first with a takedown against Heath Moyer of North Linn. But Moyer was able to get Whitinger in several near-fall situations which called for an uncanny amount of determination and agility from Whitinger to get out of.
In the end, it was a 3-point near-fall that proved to be the difference in a 9-6 decision won by Moyer.
Whitinger went on to assure he will wrestle another day in Des Moines when he got a technical-fall victory over Aiden Christiansen of Hinton in the consolation round.
Dettmer was pinned in the final second of the first period against Joey Wolf of Woodbine, then was eliminated from further competition when he was pinned by Gavyn Fischer of AHSTW in the consolation round.
North Butler senior Brandon Trees lost a tough overtime Class 1A first-round 170-pound battle against Lisbon senior Bryce Werderman, who placed sixth in the bracket at last year’s state meet.
With the score tied at 1 in the final seconds of regulation, Trees looked as if he scored a match-winning takedown but the officials ruled that time had expired.
Both wrestlers battled to a stalemate in the ensuing added one-minute period. Then after Werderman rode out Trees in the subsequent 30-second period, he scored an escape during his “down-position” period, which proved to be the winner.
Trees won his subsequent consolation match against Jace Morgenstern of Clarinda with a 7-0 decision to stay alive in the tournament.
Rockford 160-pound junior Cameron Rasing also lost a close
Class 1A first-round match. Against Ethan Fulcher of Hudson, Rasing battled back from a 7-3 deficit to tie it at 7 with a little more than a minute remaining in regulation.
Opting to set Fulcher free for a 1-point escape in hopes to take the lead with a takedown, Rasing was taken down himself. Now up 10-7, Fulcher was willing to sustain a 1-point stalling penalty in the final seconds while holding on a 10-8 decision win.
Rasing still has a shot at a top-eight podium placing as he pinned Jackson Dunning of St. Albert in the consolation round.
