SAINT ANSGAR — When Ciana Sonberg came into the home stretch after hitting a 2-run homer in the first inning of Charles City’s non-conference road game against Saint Ansgar on Tuesday, she shouted, “Time to go back-to-back again!”

She was more than likely directing that at teammate Tayler Schmidt, who follows her in the batting order.

In the previous two Comet victories over Clear Lake and Waukon in order, Sonberg and Schmidt hit back-to-back homers.

So why not a triple-double? … or would that be a double-triple? … or how ‘bout a three-peat repeat?

Alas, Schmidt singled, but she would have several more chances to go back-to-back as Sonberg would later homer two more times for a total of 5 runs batted in during Charles City’s 11-1 five-inning win over the Saints.

After the second time Sonberg homered, Schmidt drew a walk. Then after the third time Sonberg homered — all three were center-field vicinity shots — Schmidt drove a Lily Walk pitch deep to right-center only to have Saints center fielder Hali Anderson haul it in with her back against the fence.

Though Schmidt didn’t get the homer — her and Sonberg are now tied for the team lead with seven apiece — she did pick up her fifth pitching win of the season while giving up just three hits in five innings.

Incoming freshman Ashlyn Hoeft also homered for the Comets, her second of the season.

Rachel Chambers, another incoming freshman, had three hits including a triple; Kelby Katcher had a double and a RBI single; Lisabeth Fiser and Payton Reams both had two hits; and Madeline Peters doubled for Charles City.

Overall, the Class 4A No.1-ranked Comets pounded out 18 hits — seven for extra bases — while improving their overall record to 24-2.

On Wednesday, the Comets will host Central Springs in another non-conference game. The Panthers are currently ranked No. 6 in Class 2A according to the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.

The Saints (5-12) got their lone run from a solo line-shot to right-center field from Jadyn Anderson.
