Comets make themselves at home while defeating Saints, 10-6

SAINT ANSGAR — The Charles City Comets have beaten some tough teams on the road this year … even though most of those wins were technically home games.
The list includes Decorah, New Hampton, Waverly-Shell Rock … all teams either currently ranked or formerly ranked in the Top 10 of their respective classes this season.
Saint Ansgar is another formidable if not young and promising team.
On Thursday, the Comets played the Saints in Saint Ansgar for yet another Charles City home game moved from Sportsmen’s Park due to weather-worn conditions.
With a pair of 5-run rallies in the first and second innings, the Comets won the non-conference game, 10-6, while improving to 14-11 overall with two games remaining in the regular season before their Class 3A substate semifinal against Center Point-Urbana on Friday the 13th at Wartburg College.
Comet junior Jace Cajthaml jacked his third home run of the season — a 3-run blast — to open the scoring during the rally in the first, which also included a RBI triple from freshman J.J. Ritter.
Dylan Salinas had a 2-run double and Theo Arndt had a 1-run double in the subsequent rally in the second.
When the Saints went with their third reliever John May to start the third inning, Charles City was held scoreless for the rest of the game.
Later, the Saints rallied for 3 runs in the fourth to close the gap to 10-6 as it didn’t seem as if 10 runs were going to be enough to win this game.
But Comet junior Cole Reams was as just as effective in his long relief stint as he struck out six and yielded one hit and one walk after entering the game amid a bases-loaded jam with one out in the fourth before putting out the fire with minimal damage and closing out the rest of the game.
Leadoff hitter Colton Slinger had three hits and scored two runs for the Comets, who also got “platoon” production from the fifth spot in the lineup — with Noah Schlader starting at second base and Tait Arndt at the flex position, Schlader had a RBI single and scored two runs when he was allowed to play offense, and Arndt doubled in one of his two at-bats with his pinch-runner eventually scoring.
Bryton Low was 2 for 2 with an RBI double for the Saints (16-9).
