Press Staff Report

CHARLES CITY — Class 1A No. 1-ranked Janesville will not have to face Class 3A No. 9-ranked New Hampton in the postseason.

But how well would the Wildcats do against the Chickasaws?

That was answered Saturday as the two programs faced each other for what would be the only time this season during the Charles City Volleyball Invitational.

Going into the invite with an undefeated record, the Chickasaws won the first set 23-21 before the Wildcats stormed back to win the second (21-8) and third (15-10).

Janesville’s next opponent in the seven-team tourney were the hosting Comets, who played the Wildcats tough early on in the first set while taking a 9-8 lead. Janesville eventually took control to win 21-13 before cruising to a 21-8 win in the second set.

Next up for the Comets were the Chickasaws, which had defeated Charles City 3-1 earlier in the season.

On Saturday, the Comets won the first set 21-19, but fell in the next two — 21-7, 15-10.

The Comets also faced Class 1A No. 5-ranked Tripoli, which defeated them in straight sets.

Charles City’s lone win in the tournament was against Oelwein.

Janesville went undefeated during the 8-hour event.
