Comet bowlers ‘split’ with Sailors in home opener

CHARLES CITY — Almost as traditional as the holidays themselves, Charles City’s boys bowling team tends to heat up when it’s “baking time”.

In Tuesday’s season-opener against Waterloo Columbus at Comet Bowl, the Comets were down to the Sailors by 137 pins after the cumulative individual round going into the Baker rotation round.

“It was like that last time we faced them,” Charles City head bowling coach Doug Bohlen said about last season’s dual-meet victory over the Sailors. “We were down going in, but won it in the Baker round.”

The Comets were able to make up some ground before getting locked in the pocket in the fourth game.

“But we couldn’t get a break,” Bohlen said of a series of intermittent 1-pin taps that spoiled what could have been a string of eight straight strikes.

The Comets shot a 215 that game.

“With a little luck, it could have been a 270,” Bohlen said.

In the end, Columbus won 2981 to 2901.

The Sailors were led by Casey Halbmaier’s two-game 484 series, and Logan Balk 455 series that included a 256 game.

Comet junior Noah Reams led the Comets with a 434 series.

“We struggled a little and made some bad shots in the first half,” Bohlen said. “Maybe this will wake them up little.”

The Comet girls team won easily in their match with the Sailors (2,76-1,859). Senior Madison Ross led Charles City and all female bowlers with a 437 series that included a 247 second game.

“She has been getting hotter during practice, and she really got hot today,” Bohlen said of Ross.

Charles City won both junior varsity matches. The boys won 2,577 to 2,397 thanks to a 247 game by junior Nicholas Roney; the girls won 1,819 to 1,590.

The Comets will be back in action when they take on Denver on Nov. 30 at Panther Lanes in Tripoli.
