Rockford defeats Clarksville, 65-42, in season-opener
Press Staff Report
ROCKFORD — After just six full team practices, the Rockford Warriors boys basketball team managed to overcome early foul trouble and cold shooting out of the gate to defeat Clarksville, 65-42, in a non-conference season-opener on Monday.
Matthew Muller and Matthew Schubert each scored 14 points, and Max Rooney added 12 for the Warriors, who will travel to Nashua-Plainfield on Tuesday for a boys and girls varsity double-header.
Clarksville took advantage of the Rockford’s early struggles while taking a 14-13 lead after the first quarter. The Warriors went on to outscore the Indians 24-14 in the second quarter, then matched them point-for-point in the third quarter to maintain a 9-point lead.
Then the Warriors shut out Clarksville in the fourth quarter while scoring 14 points themselves to cap the 23-point victory.
Christopher Behrends scored a game-high 24 points — including four 3-point field goals — for the Indians.
Many members of Rockford’s basketball team also played for the Warrior football team that recently finished runner-up in the Class 8-Player State Championships. Among them is all-state quarterback Jacob Staudt, who is the returning leading scorer and 3-point shooter for the basketball team.
While making the quick transition to basketball, Staudt had an off night from the field while scoring 5 points. But he did initiate the play that helped punctuate the pending victory.
After hitting the floor to gain control of a loose ball at midcourt late in the third quarter, Staudt from a prone position dished the ball to 6-foot-7 junior Schubert, who finished the open-court break with a tomahawk one-handed jam.
