CHARLES CITY — While opening the season against some formidable Cowboys and Indians, Charles City junior Elliott Sinnwell was among several Comets to emerge from the back-to-back fights with two varsity victories.

And is wasn’t the shoes.

In fact it was his shoes that got Sinnwell in trouble before his 160-pound match against Clayton Taylor during the first meet of Tuesday’s triangular against back-to-back defending Class 2A dual team state champs New Hampton. Due to an equipment malfunction on Sinnwell’s shoes, Taylor was awarded a point before the match started.

It proved to be a non-factor as Elliott later recorded a fall 29 seconds into the third period before earning an 11-8 decision over Carter Dietz in the Comets subsequent dual against Clarion-Goldfield-Dows.

Two-time state-qualifier Dylan Koresh also went 2-0 for the Comets, first earning a major decision (10-0) over Wyatt Stochl in the 170-pound bout against the Chickasaws, then moving up to 182 to take on Cowboy Colby Lienemann and pinning him in 3:42.

“That was huge for Dylan to bump up to take on every tough kid at 182,” said Charles City co-head coach Ryan Fank.

Sophomore Alec Staudt, who was a consolation winner at the district state-qualifier last season but was on the wrong side of the wrestleback rule for a chance to wrestled for state, also had two wins — a 10-2 major decision over Chickasaw Cade Murray, and then a 16-0 technical fall over Cowboy Bryce Allen.

Despite the trio of two-time winners, the Comets fell to New Hampton 52-18 before losing to Clarion-Goldfield-Dows, 45-29.

“We put up more points on them than we did last year,” Fank said about New Hampton, “and (CGD) is always a Top 10 team, and I wish we could have had some matches back from them.

“There are some pros and cons. We need to work more on our conditioning, but we had some kids fighting out there. Jacob Vais, who weighs less than 100 pounds, he was fighting out there. I wish I had 100 Jacob Vaises. Tyler Mahler, who never wrestled before, came out and got a win for us at jayvee. Ryan Zuspan, another senior out for the first time, also fought well for us.”

And let’s not forget the girls.

“They were awesome,” Fank said as his team is well-represented among the female ranks this season. “Emma Perez … Marley Hagarty … Toni Maloy … they all picked up big wins for us in jayvee.”

The Comets will be back in action this Thursday with a double-dual at Columbus Catholic in Waterloo before participating in Saturday’s invitational at Cedar Falls High School.
