CHARLES CITY — Though the majority of the populous has gotten a bit soft over the holidays, the Charles City Comets wrestling team seems to approaching the New Year with a much greater resolve.

“The second half of the season is when you start sharpening the blade,” Comet co-head coach Ryan Fank said after his Comets recorded a pair of varsity dual victories while hosting Northeast Iowa Conference rival Oelwein and nearby neighbor Riceville, Thursday at Comet Gym to start the 2019 portion of their season.

The Comets first defeated the Huskies, 40-30, before rolling over the Wildcats, 61-12.

Fank was a little more pleased with the effort and results than he was on Dec. 20 when the Comets lost a dual to Central Springs just before the holiday break.

“We did a lot of work during the holidays,” Fank said. “We had to find their wall and push them through it.

“We worked on everything … top, bottom, neutral.”

Among the Comets wrestlers earning two wins during the double dual were sophomore 126-pounder Alec Staudt, who pinned Oelwein’s Andrew Roete in 1:22 and then later stopping Riceville’s Isiaih Hill in 43 seconds; junior 132-pounder Bronson Forsyth, who earned a 16-7 major decision over Oelwein’s Leighton Patterson before sticking Riceville’s JD Beren in 38 seconds; junior 152-pounder Carter Proffitt, who pinned Oelwein’s Joey Barron late into their bout before working overtime to decision (6-1) Wildcat Lawson Losee; and 195-pound senior Ryan Zuspan, who pinned Oelwein’s Cooper Smock (1:11) before sticking Riceville’s Carter Mauer (:31).

Zuspan’s pin of Smock started the meet against Oelwein. With a subsequent fall victory by Comet freshman Jacob Vais in his 106-pound bout against Nelson Lopez, Charles City jumped out to a 12-3 lead. Several fall victories by the Huskies kept them close, but when Charles City’s ranked 170-pounder Dylan Koresh managed to earn a 15-9 decision over a very game Bryan Graves, it clinched the victory barring any penalty points for the Comets.

The Comets benefitted from a bevy of forfeit wins against the Wildcats, yet still won five of the six matches wrestled including Elliott Sinnwell’s 14-4 major decision over Chad Eastman in their 160-pound bout.

Charles City’s female wrestlers were particularly dominating on Thursday while wrestling in a junior varsity meet against Oelwein.

Marissa Bengston (106), Toni Maloy (126), Emma Perez (132), Emma Grimm (138) and Allie Cross (145) were all win-by-fall victors with Maloy earning two wins.

The Comet girls are scheduled to participate in a girls wrestling tournament at Central Elkader on Saturday while the boys will wrestle in a tournament at Forest City.
