CHARLES CITY — You hate to concede defeat before the battle begins, but you got a bad feeling that Sumner-Fredricksburg was going to win the battle of the boards against Charles City when they were giving the pre-game introductions before Monday’s non-conference girls basketball matchup.
The Cougars had a substantial size advantage at most every starting position, especially with the sister post tandem of Cassidy and Jenna Pagel.
Yet as things turned out, the Comets crashed the glass effectively on both sides of the floor and managed to secure an unofficial season high in offensive rebounds.
Though the Comets fought valiantly for second- and third-chance opportunities, they couldn’t cash enough of them in as the Cougars won 58-40.
Ivy Hirsch scored a game-high 17 points and Cassidy Pagel had 16 to lead Sumner-Fredricksburg to its seventh-straight victory while improving to 15-4 for the season.
Charles City freshman Ashlyn Hoeft recorded her first varsity double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds — six of them offensive.
Lydia Staudt, another freshman, scored 11 points including three 3-point field goals; and senior Kara Hoffman had 8 points including two 3-pointers and a foot-on-the-arc-line 2-pointer for the Comets, who fell to 0-17.
* The Cougars won the previous junior varsity game by a score of 47-32 despite Comet junior Olyvia Zuspan’s 8 points, which included a pair of 25-foot 3-pointers.
