Press Staff Report

It’s generally considered a difficult task to beat a team twice in consecutive games … especially when the games are less than a week apart.

The Charles City Comets will be forced to do that — or at least win the latter game — in order to advance past the first round within the Class 3A-Substate 2 boys basketball bracket.

The Iowa High School Athletic Association released the Class 3A and 4A substate brackets on Thursday. With a 12-6 overall record going into the final weekend of the regular season, Charles City is the No. 3 seed of its bracket and has been assigned to take on No. 6-seed Iowa Falls-Alden in the first round, 8 p.m. Feb. 18 at Webster City High School.

The Comets are due to finish the regular season against the same Cadets (7-9) the previous Thursday (Feb. 14) in Iowa Falls.

Winner from that first-round game will face the winner of the Decorah-at-Webster City first-round game in the semifinals, 7 p.m. Feb. 21 at the home court of the higher seeded semifinalist.

The No. 1 seed in the bracket is also the No. 1-ranked team in Class 3A — Clear Lake, which will host No. 8-seed Hampton-Dumont in the first round, 8 p.m. Feb. 18. The winner from there will face the winner from the Algona-vs.-Waverly-Shell Rock first-round game in the semifinals, 7 p.m. Feb. 21.

The substate championship game will be 7 p.m. Feb. 25 at Mason City High School.

The Comets have already played four of the eight teams in the bracket.

On Dec. 3, the CL Lions came to Comet Gym and shot the lights on way to defeating Charles City 80-67.

The Comets recently defeated Algona (68-50), completed a regular-season sweep of Waverly-Shell Rock, and will go for another regular-season sweep when taking on Decorah in Decorah on Friday.

Going into the weekend, the top-ranked Lions are undefeated. Their closest challenge of the season has been against No. 2-seed Webster City, which lost to them by 1 point (52-51) on Jan. 21 with the Lions completing a regular-season sweep of their conference opponent.
