The best bowlers adjust to a variety of lane conditions, be it dry, wet or super-slick.

It was the super-slick “lane conditions” of the roadways across the state — especially the two-lane roadways — that prompted the rescheduling of most of Tuesday’s joint district state qualifying bowling meets to Wednesday and Thursday of this week.

The Charles City Comets, whose boys and girls teams were district champions last year before both placing second at the Class 1A State Bowling Championships, had their joint qualifier moved to Wednesday as well as a change in site.

Originally to take place at Maple Lanes in Waterloo, the qualifier — hosted by Columbus Catholic — has been moved to Cadillac Lanes, 650 LaPorte Rd., Waterloo, where it will start at 10 a.m. Wednesday.

The Comets have had success bowling at both houses. Last month, Charles City won a Baker Rotation Tournament in both boys and girls divisions at Cadillac Lanes. And this past weekend at Maple Lanes, Charles City senior Madison Ross rolled a three-game total of 746 that included a 10-strikes-in-a-row 289 game while winning the girls title in a District Individual Tournament. Placing runner-up in the girls division was Charles City sophomore Sarah Mitchell.

Last year the State Bowling Championships were held at Cadillac Lanes, where both the Comet boys and girls teams earned their runner-up trophies.

Cadillac Lanes will also be the site for this year’s State Bowling Championships starting next week with the Class 1A tournament 10 a.m. Feb. 18.

Not including her scores at the individual tournament, Ross is leading the Comet girls with a 215.2 average. Of all the girls in the state — all classes — with at least 10 games bowled, only Donna Diggs of Davenport Central has a higher average (215.8).

Leading the Comet boys are freshman Cael Bohlen (199.1 average) and junior Noah Reams (198.4 average).
