Comets defeat Cadets, 72-64, advance to substate semis

Press Staff Report

WEBSTER CITY — There are 3-point possessions and there are 3-foul possessions.

Sometimes the latter can be more lethal.

The Charles City Comets were leading Iowa-Falls Alden 62-60 with a little more than three minutes remaining in regulation in their Class 3A-Substate 2 boys basketball quarterfinal, Monday at Webster City High School.

During one possession, the Cadets were able to draw three fouls while putting themselves in the bonus.

But it was clutch free-throw shooting by the Comets that enabled them finish a 72-64 final while advancing to the semifinals where they will face No. 2-seed Webster City on the Lynx’ home court, 7 p.m. Thursday.

After Jack Molstead assisted Tait Arndt for a layup giving the Comets a little more room at 64-60, Molstead, Bradley Andrews and JJ Ritter went a collective 8-of-10 from the foul line to put the game away.

Molstead led the Comets with 32 points, with Andrews and Ritter scoring 13 and 10, respectively.

The Comets (13-7) led 18-13 after one quarter and 33-30 at intermission.

The Cadets responded with a 22-point third quarter while taking a 52-50 lead going into the fourth.

That’s when Charles City outscored Iowa Fall-Alden 22-12 for the difference in the game.

Coming off a hand injury, Karson Sharar scored a game-high 34 points for the Cadets.

Earlier that night, Webster City defeated Decorah 55-47 to advance to the semifinals.

At the other side of the bracket in the quarterfinal rounds hosted by Clear Lake, Algona defeated Waverly-Shell Rock 66-53.

Bracket championship is 7 p.m. Feb. 25 at Mason City.
