CHARLES CITY — If Jack Molstead decides to run for mayor, he might unseat the incumbent 1,767 votes to 1,759.

Or rather 1,767 points to 1,759.

With a 32-point performance during Charles City’s 72-64 win over Iowa Falls-Alden on Monday in the first round of the Class 3A-Substate 2 boys basketball bracket, Comet senior Molstead moved past former Ames High School and Iowa State University star Fred Hoiberg — a.k.a. “The Mayor” — amid the Iowa prep boys all-time scoring list.

After completing his prep career in 1991, Hoiberg stayed in his hometown while becoming a two-time All Big Eight selection for the Cyclones. Later, Hoiberg played in the NBA for 10 seasons where he shot just under 40 percent from 3-point range for his career.

Hoiberg returned to his alma mater as ISU’s head coach, leading the Cyclones to four NCAA Tournaments during his five-year tenure, including a Sweet 16 appearance in 2014.

Hoiberg moved on to coach three full seasons for the Chicago Bulls before being fired earlier this NBA season.

Earlier this high school season, Molstead passed former Iowa Hawkeye star Greg Brunner as Charles City’s all-time leading scorer.

Molstead will look to add to his running total when the Comets take on Webster City at Webster City in the substate semifinals, 7 p.m. Thursday.

Perched atop the Iowa prep boys all-time scoring list is former University of Northern Iowa guard Brooks McKowen, who scored 2,831 points for Wapsie Valley (2000-03).
