Mildred “Mert” Cummings

Mildred “Mert” Cummings, 89, of Keokuk, passed away at 1:36 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 5, 2015, at River Hills Village in Keokuk.

Mert was born in Charles City on Jan. 8, 1926, the daughter of Frank E. and V. Clarice Wilson Meinzer. She was united in marriage to Bill Cummings in 1947. He preceded her in death in 1976.

Mert graduated high school in Charles City and later moved to Keokuk. She was employed as a bookkeeper, a telephone operator, and later sold Merle Norman products. She was a 48-year member of American Legion Auxiliary. She was a member of the Ladies of the Elks, and greatly enjoyed golfing and rooting for the University of Iowa Hawkeyes.

Mert is survived by her niece Ruthann (Frank) Brekke; three great nephews: Jason (Shauna), Jeremy (Angie) and Jeff (Heather) Gansen and nine great-great nieces and nephews; and her dear friend Ann Stigall.

Mert was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Bill, her sister Helene and her brother-in-law Walt Gabelmann.

A visitation celebrating her life will be held from 1-2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 14, 2015, at DeJong-Greaves Celebration of Life Center at 1212 Concert Street in Keokuk. A time of prayers and sharing will immediately follow the visitation with Rev. Marty Goetz officiating.

Memorials may be made to the University of Iowa football and basketball programs, or HCI Hospice Services.
