Lester L. Brooks

Brooks, LesterLester L. Brooks, 91, of Marshalltown and formerly of Waverly, died on Thursday, Dec. 1, 2016, at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown.

Lester was born Jan. 12, 1925, in Bassett, the son of Joseph and Clara (Nelson) Brooks. He served in the Army during World War II, fighting in New Guinea and the Philippines before returning home to Wisconsin. There he met his wife, Lavonne Critzman, and they were united in marriage on Feb. 27, 1946, in Charles City. Lester worked as a Chevrolet mechanic in Tripoli, Iowa Falls and Waverly. When Lester retired he spent his time woodworking, gardening and fishing. Lavonne passed away on Sept. 16, 1996.

Lester enjoyed going to the Senior Center and playing cards and bingo with his friends. During an operation at the VA Hospital, he lost the use of his legs and became a resident of the Iowa Veterans home in Nov. of 2013.

Lester is survived by a son, Carl (Betty) Brooks of Wilhoit, Ariz.; a daughter, Loralee (Harold) Renelt of Mercedes, Texas; a son, Russell (Marlys) Brooks of Newport, N.C.; a son, Jim (Julie) Brooks of Eldora; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Daisy Boggess of Charles City.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Lavonne; six brothers and six sisters.

Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2016, at 10:30 a.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church with Pastor Carolyn Bowers officiating. Burial will be held in Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene. Visitation will be held on Monday from 5-7 p.m. at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly and also for one hour prior to services on Tuesday at the church.
