The Charles City Senior Citizens group is announcing a name change, effective Wednesday, Jan. 24, at 11:15 a.m.

“After much deliberation and meetings, and due to encouragement from many others, the Senior Center will now be called the Community Center, doing business as the Senior Citizens of the Charles City Area,” the organization said in a press statement.

The group stressed that there will be no change in the congregate meals which are served Mondays through Fridays at about 11:55 a.m., or in the informative programs that are offered many days beginning at about 11 a.m., or in the activities and discounts that are available to Senior Citizens members.

Persons are not required to be a member to take part in the meals or programs.

“It’s the best medicine ever – to hear all the excellent speakers and then to enjoy a good nutritious meal with a warm cup of coffee for a donation of $5 is a blessing for me,” said board member Ivadell Stevenson.

Meal reservations are requested by calling 641-228-3114 and leaving a message any time of day, at least one to two days before the planned meal.

If people wish to play all kinds of cards and pool at the Community Center, Senior Citizens memberships are available for $10 for the year of 2024.

A membership also includes activities during the week, free rolls and coffee on a Saturday in February, a $10 reduced rate to rent the center for five hours ($90 instead of $100, and $10 per hour after five hours), playing pool Mondays through Fridays from 9 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m., and a free Christmas party in December.

A monthly menu of meals and schedule of programs is available by stopping in at the center. Meals may change occasionally, as the center is closed when school is canceled or begins two hours late.

Public bingo will still be played at the Community Center each Tuesday evening, with early birds at 6:30 and regular bingo at 7 p.m. This is open to all participants of any age in Charles City and the surrounding area, but children must be accompanied by an adult.
