Cedar River runs strong for the Iowa Games

The Cedar River was packed with paddlers this weekend as Charles City once again hosted whitewater events for the Iowa Games, on Saturday, June 15.
In contrast to last year, where drought conditions brought the Cedar River to a near record low water level, the river was running high and fast this weekend, creating a strong current for the paddlers to overcome as they navigated the slalom checkpoints.
“The whitewater park offers so much flexibility across water levels,” said Iowa Games Whitewater Commissioner Piper Wall. “This is a lovely level.”
The event brought in 21 competitors of all ages, ranging from 5 to 62 years old, to test their whitewater skills in downriver and slalom runs in a variety of craft including kayaks, rafts and paddle boards.
“We’ve had the whole array,” said Wall.
Participants were invited to run the course in up to four events, resulting in a total of 70 trips down the river throughout the day.
Some competitors came from as far as Missouri to run the course for the fun of it, even though, being from out of state, they wouldn’t qualify for medals in the Iowans-only competition.
Starting Saturday morning and going into the afternoon, the day was blessed with comfortable weather. Nobody minded the afternoon sprinkles and the overcast clouds kept the competitors from getting too hot during the day.
“We’re doing well with this weather,” said Wall. “I’m loving this temperature.”
Speaking highly of the Charles City Whitewater Park, Wall expressed her appreciation for the city employees and local volunteers who made the event possible for the Iowa Games. From setting up the course to keeping track of times and scores, the event depends on local support to run smoothly, she said.
“You’ve got this wonderful setting and all these people to help,” said Wall. “I’m so thankful for them.”
