A person was shot in the leg during an altercation Friday evening, March 21, southwest of Marble Rock, the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office reported.

Sheriff’s deputies and other law enforcement responded to a report shortly after 8 p.m. at a rural residence on 290th Street of an individual being shot during an assault.

During the assault there was a struggle between two males for a gun and it was accidentally discharged, the Sheriff’s Office said. As a result of the discharge of the firearm, a female was shot in the leg.

The gunshot victim was transported to Mercy Medical Center in Mason City with non-life-threatening injuries, the report said.

The Sheriff’s Office said that Leroy Klink, age 45, from Marble Rock, was charged with domestic abuse assault impeding air flow and domestic abuse assault with intent to inflict serious injuries. The investigation is ongoing.

Records with Floyd County District Court show Klink is accused of putting his hands around an alleged victim’s neck and choking her. He is also accused of getting into an altercation with another individual when that person allegedly tried to take a firearm away from Klink and the firearm discharged, striking the female. Klink then allegedly pushed the other person into a refrigerator, causing a lump on that person’s head and cuts to his face.

Klink had an initial appearance on March 22 before the district court magistrate where he was ordered held on $7,000 cash bond.

A no contact order was issued between Klink and the alleged female victim.

Assisting the Sheriff’s Office responding to the scene were the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, Iowa State Patrol, Butler County Sheriff’s Office, Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office, Charles City Police Department, Marble Rock Fire Department, AMR and Greene Ambulance.
