She was born May 12, 1930 to Rae and Mona Melrose. She graduated from Charles City High School in 1948. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Minnesota and graduated from the University of Hawaii with a master’s degree in English. She later earned a second master’s degree in public health.

She was a travel agent with Hilton Hawaiian Village in Honolulu, Hawaii. She did much volunteer work as well, assisting various politicians and helping at the Waikiki Drug Clinic. She traveled extensively, visiting China, Russia, South America, and most of Europe. She was an avid reader, loved going to movies, and was a cat lover.

Mona had an inquisitive mind. She always asked a lot of questions and wanted to know every detail of a subject. She was a thoughtful person, one who worked on growing her compassion, wisdom and strength. She loved the ethnic diversity in Hawaii. Mona lived among the rainbows in Manoa Valley — loving life, appreciating beauty, and honoring humanity. She will be missed by friends and family.

Living family members include daughter Lisa of Honolulu and brother Andy Melrose of Charles City.

She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter Andrea; husband Mason Altiery; and sister Nancy Albertson.
