Visitation will be held from 3-5 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 19, 2025, at Hauser Weishaar Funeral Home in Charles City, beginning with the rosary prayer at 2:30 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the funeral mass at the church on Monday.

Angela, born on Jan. 16, 1932, in Charles City, was the only child of Clarence and Dorcas (Monen) Bryant. Angela grew up on her parents’ farm and enjoyed farm life, especially her pet horses. Angela graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in 1949.

In 1953, she graduated from Iowa State University in Ames with a dietetic degree. She completed her dietetics internship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. She then married Charles William ‘Bill’ Smith, her college sweetheart, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in 1954. The couple made their home on the family farm west of Charles City. They were blessed with 6 children before her husband died in 1966 at age 39 from cancer.

Angela started working part-time in the early 1960s as a dietician at Floyd County Hospital and as the resident dietician at several nursing homes in Charles City and the New Hampton Hospital. She retired in 1997. Throughout her life she actively served her community by volunteering with Meals on Wheels, her church, hospice, Boy and Girl Scouts, and 4-H. In 1986, the Charles City Chamber of Commerce recognized Angela’s commitment to her community and named her the Charles City Woman of the Year.

Family and faith were very important to Angela. She enjoyed her involvement with her six childrens’ adventures. She drew on seemingly endless energy to support her family, including her mother, who became bound to a wheelchair in her late thirties. This engagement with family continued on with her grandchildren. Angela wanted to be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, good friend, and a faithful Catholic woman.

Angela is survived by her six children and their spouses: William John (Fran Lai), Daniel Joseph (Shirley Russell), Mary Angela “Angie” (Thomas Harris), Mark Louis (Renee Nelson), James Arthur (Mary Fredericks), and Anne Marie (Christian Michel, deceased); thirteen grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren.

Angela was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Bill.
