John Eugene Herron, the son of John Jr. and Genevieve (DeWalle) Herron, was born on Feb. 7, 1947, in Charles City. He attended schools in Charles City and graduated from Charles City High School in 1965. After high school, John served in the United States Army from 1966-1968. He then worked for GMT, which later became TDS, in Waverly until his retirement. In retirement, he worked part-time for T&C Machine in Charles City. John was very proud of his military service and in 2023 he received his Quilt of Valor and went on the Honor Flight to DC with his brother-in-law. John was a member of the Moose and The Izaak Walton League.

John was a very avid outdoorsman. He loved hunting, trapping, fishing, camping, and tending to his and Karol’s flower and vegetable gardens. He was also a handyman and enjoyed welding, woodworking, and completing projects around his house and for others. John also liked working on cars, especially his 1967 Convertible GTO. John loved his family and loved attending family gatherings.
