While still in high school, Bob enlisted in the Army to serve his country during World War II. He proudly served as a member of the 101st Airborne, where he saw action in the Battle of the Bulge. Bob was part of the first troops to arrive in Berlin after Germany surrendered and was part of the rebuilding of the city. He is believed to be the last combat World War II Veteran in Charles City and Floyd County. After the war, he continued his service in Berlin, Germany. When he returned home, he worked for the Jefferson Creamery where he often talked about his fond memories of his adventures with his coworkers.
Bob was later united in marriage with Marjorie Mae Crandell. Three children, William Jay (Bill), Kristin Gay and Christopher Paul Calvert were born from this union.
He met Lloyd Kordick and became a manager of his Wholesale Plumbing Supply warehouses in Ames, and later Carroll, Iowa, where he ended up as an owner and retired from the business after 35 years.
In 1992, he married Margaret Sweet from Charles City and enjoyed a lifetime love of 33 years.
Bob was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City.
