FISCHER: Resolution realizations
By Travis Fischer, tkfischer@charlescitypress.com
It’s a new year and that means it’s time for new resolutions, right?
I’ve honestly never really been one for resolutions. Generally when I decide to do something, I do so without the self-imposed push that the New Year brings.
For some reason though, this year I’ve been thinking about having some kind of goal to set. Something I can do that I wasn’t already planning on doing.

So what can I do in 2025 to top 2024?
I don’t know, but thanks to the popularity of annual recaps, I have a lot of data to help guide my decision.
For instance, I know that I spent 130 hours on my elliptical last year, covering 647.71 miles of distance and burning 81,563 calories. Hopefully the health benefits of that exercise makes up for the 866 hours I spent streaming video games on Twitch.
I could strive for improvements on either of those metrics, but that feels like a copout. Like I said, I was already doing that anyway.
What’s something big I could resolve to do in 2025?
I don’t really have any major vices to tackle. I don’t smoke and only drink on occasion. Heck, I haven’t even kept pop in the house for years. My only real dependence is caffeine and you’ll have to pry my coffee out of my cold, dead, hands.
Travel more? I’d love to go back to Japan if I didn’t already have Comic-Con as my designated holiday. I can’t really justify more that one major trip a year.
And then there’s the question of if I should even do something big?
In fact, I’m just now realizing that 2024 is the first full calendar year in recent memory that didn’t feature a life-changing alteration to my status quo. Same job, same apartment, even the same relationship status. Which, sadly, is single, but it’s still the same.
The biggest change in my life in the last 12 months has been trading my Chrysler Sebring for a Chevy Sonic, which is probably the least impactful change I’ve had since before the pandemic.
So what the heck am I thinking looking for more?
Maybe my resolution this year should be to just keep on keeping on and enjoy having a status quo. Keep it low key. Resolve to read more books or something. I’m already a ways into “Frankenstein” for the first time, so I’ve got a start on that.
