WINTHROP — The Charles City Comets girls wrestling team claimed three titles and a pair of runner-up showings during Saturday’s Marilyn Invitational hosted by East Buchanan.

Included among the trio is returning senior state-medalist Leah Stewart, who improved her near-perfect season record to 29-1 after adding four fall victories while going undefeated in the 190-pound category.

Stewart’s freshman teammate Brooklyn Warnke placed second among 190-pounds.

Comet 100-pound sophomore Sophia Calpito won all her matches, including a 58-second fall victory over runner-up Livia Smith of South Tama, on way to winning her title.

Comet 110-pound sophomore Emma Schmitt went 4-0 for her title.

Charles City 125-pound freshman Sophia Stevens placed second in her class.

The Comets placed fourth among nine teams with 101.5 team points behind host and champion East Buchanan (192.5), Vinton-Shellsburg (188.5) and South Tama (149).

* At the Hudson Wrestling Invitational on Saturday, Charles City 138-pound sophomore Connor Jenkins got a 4-1 sudden-victory OT win over Garner-Hayfield-Ventura senior Jace Hendrickson in the first round, and then after being sent to the consolation side of the bracket, Jenkins defeated Hendrickson again with a 14-2 major decision in the third-place match.

That accounted for much of Charles City’s 22 team points, which placed them 10th among 11 teams.

Don Bosco won the meet with 230 team points ahead of runner-up North Fayette Valley (220.5) and Nashua-Plainfield (192).
