Comet girls place 2nd at North Central Bowling Conference Baker Tournament

WATERLOO — After edging the Charles City Comets by 4 pins (170-166) in the first game of a best-of-three championship series to close out girls play at Wednesday’s North Central Conference Baker Tournament at Cadillac Lanes, the Decorah Vikings rallied late in the second game with a string of strikes and threatened to sweep the Comets, who jumped out to a big lead through the first five frames.
But with senior anchorwoman Payton Hadley getting a strike and knocking down nine pins on her next two balls in the 10th frame, Charles City was able to hold on an win by 1 pin (169-168) to force a third game for the championship.
There, Charles City missed a couple of spare attempts, which opened the door for the Vikings, who clinched it with a 187-161 win.
The meet consisted of 14 teams, of which bowl a preliminary round to determine the top four for the single-elimination semifinal and championship bracket.
The other two teams that advanced to the top four were Grundy Center and Forest City.
Other members on Charles City’s Baker lineup for the championship series included seniors Isabel Crawford and Darian Hesse; sophomore Kinleigh Bahe; and freshman Alexis Putney.
Columbus Catholic won the boys side of the tournament.
