Comets Destiny Kolheim, Leah Stewart advance to semis at Girls State Wrestling Championships

CORALVILLE — Charles City seniors Destiny Kolheim and Leah Stewart both advanced to the semifinals of their respective Class 1A brackets during the Thursday session of the Girls Wrestling State Championships at Xtream Arena.
In the 155-pound bracket, Kolheim (25-5) pinned Perry sophomore Julie Maylum at the 4:54 mark of their first-round match, and then “busted the bracket” when she advanced past No. 2-seed, Decorah junior Lauren Luzum, with a 6-1 decision.
In Friday’s semifinal round, Kolheim will face Benton junior Lizzy Wolf (31-1).
Stewart (39-1), a state-medalist from last season, pinned Columbus sophomore Jada Moats 36 seconds into their 190-pound first-round match before earning a 5-0 decision over Logan-Magnolia sophomore Mary Bowman in the quarterfinal.
Stewart will face West Liberty sophomore Bricsia Garcia-Vasquez (29-1) in Friday’s semifinal round.
