DES MOINES — Charles City senior Carter Haberkorn’s second trip to the State Traditional Wrestling Championships came to an end Thursday night at Wells Fargo Arena in the third round of the Class 2A 120-pound consolation bracket.

After suffering a first-period fall defeat to Winterset junior Judah Gurwell during Wednesday’s opening round, Haberkorn bounced back the following day with a 17-3 major decision over Independence’s Zachary Homan in the second round of the consolations — all first-round losers in the bracket had received consolation first-round byes.

Haberkorn’s season came to an end when Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont sophomore Garrett Pumphrey eliminated him from medal/podium placement with a 13-6 decision.

Haberkorn needed a win over Pumphrey and another win in Friday fourth round of consolations to guarantee a top-eight awards placement. He finished his final prep wrestling season with a 23-15 record.

As a sophomore, Haberkorn qualified to state as a 106-pounder. After sitting out a season his junior year, Haberkorn returned to wrestle for the Comets his senior season.

Haberkorn earned his second state qualification when he edged North Fayette Valley junior Kyson Moss 1-0 in the 120-pound wrestleback at last Saturday’s district tournament at New Hampton.

Haberkorn was forced to take the backside bracket route when he lost a high-scoring 16-15 decision to eventual district champion Kaden Mitchell of Waukon in the semifinals after Haberkorn wasn’t awarded what appeared to be a last-second match-winning takedown by the referee.
