Press Staff Report

WAVERLY — For the third time in as many meets, and in the first while competing outdoors, Charles City sophomore Sofia Calpito won the girls long jump.

Her latest feat came on Thursday at the Waverly-Shell Rock Coed Meet with a winning flight of 17 feet, 5 inches — a season-best for returning state-qualifier Calpito, whose personal-best (17 feet, 6 ½ inches) was achieved her freshman season.

The Charles City all-time record in the girls long jump was set 36 years ago when Dyan Fluhrer flew 17 feet, 8 inches through the air.

The Comets’ other win during the meet came in the boys 1,600-meter medley relay where Patrick Bruening, John Bruening, Holden McInroy and Xander Graeser combined efforts for a first-place time of 3 minutes, 50.46 seconds.

Comet junior Victor Ward placed second in the boys 100-meter dash with a time of 11.54 seconds which was bested by Clear Lake’s Titan Schmitt (11.46).

Charles City senior Leah Stewart, who set Comet girl records in the shot put and discus last season, placed second in the discus with a throw of 102 feet, 7 inches. Hudson senior Addy Engel won the event with a throw of 128 feet, 5 inches.

Charles City placed fifth among eight teams with a coed combined 66 team points.

The hosting Go-Hawks won the meet with 207 team points with Clear Lake a distant second (117.5 points).
