Comet netters defeat Spartans, start season 2-0

GRUNDY CENTER — The Charles City girls tennis team improved to 2-0 this young season with a 6 matches to 3 win over Grundy Center on the road on Friday.

The Comets’ No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 singles players — in respective order with sophomore Sofia Alinea, senior Anya Ruzicka and senior Marissa Avelar — all improved to 2-0 for the season.

Alinea shut out Ashlynn Draper 8-0; Ruzicka defeated Kamren Thomas-Henley 8-0; and Avelar defeated N. Eekhardt 9-7 in an extended pro-set match.

The Comets’ fourth singles win came in the No. 6 match when freshman Joselin Bonnstetter defeated Makenna Steinmeyer 8-5.

Alina and Ruzicka defeated Thomas-Henley and Kaydence Kuiper 8-3 in No. 1 doubles; and Avelar and freshman Jacy Hall won their No. 2 doubles match 9-7 for the Comets’ sixth match victory.
