Department warns residents to lock their parked vehicles

A green laser light and a rash of thefts from vehicles had the Charles City Police asking for help and issuing a warning through its Facebook page late last week.

“Looking for some help,” said a Nov. 6 post. “If you have any information on an incident that took place Monday, Nov. 2nd where a person from town shined a green laser at an airplane, please contact the police department.”

An earlier, unrelated post noted that vehicle thefts had spiked in town.

“The night before last week had a rash of car burglaries in town,” the post said. “Mostly spare change was taken but some other items were also taken from the vehicles. Just a reminder, please lock your vehicles even if they are sitting in your driveway.”

According to the department’s daily activity reports, it began receiving reports of thefts from vehicles at about 5 a.m. Thursday. Five reports were from between the 200 to 700 blocks of 5th Avenue.

Thefts were also reported in the 200 block of 8th Avenue, 600 block of 9th Avenue, and 900 block of E Street. Specific items reported missing included wallets and a GPS unit.
