Iowa beats Florida State 78-75 in OT

IOWA CITY (AP) — Iowa kept trying to give the game away.

Florida State did too, allowing Peter Jok just enough time to bury the Seminoles.

Jok scored 24 points, including a 3 with 25 seconds left in overtime, and Iowa rallied to beat Florida State 78-75 on Wednesday night to seal the Big Ten/ACC Challenge for its league.

Jarrod Uthoff added 15 with eight rebounds for the Hawkeyes (5-2), which won its third straight at home.

Florida State tied it at 71-all on a Boris Bojanovsky tip-in with 2:02 left. But Jok got free in the corner and drilled a 3 that gave Iowa a 74-72 lead.

“I’m really happy for him. He’s not afraid of the moment. He hit a big shot,” Iowa coach Fran McCaffery said of Jok.

Prison looms again for Pistorius after murder conviction

JOHANNESBURG (AP) — An appeals court decided Thursday that Oscar Pistorius got away with murder when he stood trial for killing his girlfriend, a ruling that will almost certainly send the disgraced Olympian back to prison.

The court overturned his conviction on the lesser charge of manslaughter in the 2013 shooting death of model Reeva Steenkamp and instead found Pistorius guilty of murder.

The latest dramatic twist in the case of the double amputee runner was “a human tragedy of Shakespearean proportions,” wrote Justice Lorimer Eric Leach.

Pistorius, who is under house arrest at his uncle’s mansion in Pretoria, was not in the Bloemfontein courtroom for the verdict. Steenkamp’s mother, June, sat impassively as Leach read the verdict.

The 29-year-old Pistorius served one year of a five-year sentence before being put under house arrest in October.

Coldplay to headline Super Bowl 50

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Coldplay is headlining the Super Bowl halftime show, and a spokesman for the National Football League hinted that past halftime performers could join the band onstage.

“That’s where you’ll have to tune in Feb. 7 to find out,” NFL vice president of programming and media Ron Semiao said Thursday.

Katy Perry starred in the most-watched Super Bowl halftime show in history earlier this year, when more than 118 million viewers tuned in to see her perform with Lenny Kravitz and her now-famous dancing sharks. Previous halftime headliners include Bruno Mars, Prince, Beyonce, Madonna, Bruce Springsteen, U2 and the Rolling Stones.

“The show has grown into the most important live music stage on the planet,” Semiao said, recalling the halftime show at the first Super Bowl in 1967 featured two college marching bands.

Coldplay’s halftime set will be made up of hits, Semiao said, including hot tracks from the new album, “A Head Full of Dreams,” out Friday. Coldplay confirmed the Super Bowl appearance on its website and social media pages Thursday.
