Two boys received the Arrow of Light Sunday at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Ryder Biwer and Allen Johnson were part of Pack 4166, but are now graduating and have an option to move on to be Boy Scouts.

“They accomplished pretty much every belt loop and pin they offer in Cub Scouts, which means they spent about five years working on it,” said Pack 4166 Den Leader Josh Dean. “Allen Johnson decided to he’s going to continue with Troop 1078, so he’ll join them immediately.”

This was Johnson’s last Cub Scout function.

“He’s pretty excited about it,” Dean said.

To achieve the Arrow of Light a Cub Scout has to go above and beyond what is expected.

The Arrow of Light Award is the highest rank in Cub Scouting and the only Cub Scout badge that may be worn on the Boy Scout uniform.

The Arrow of Light is not a required award for a Cub Scout to transition to Boy Scout, or to earn Eagle Scout, the highest rank in Scouting.

Prior to the Arrow of Light ceremony Tiger, Wolf, Bear and Webelos ceremonies were held and Eric Michaels performed a magic show.

A group of 10 Webelos will be attempting to get their Arrow of Light next year.

“They’re halfway through the Webelos rank,” Dean said. “There are still going to be quite a few outdoor activities and community service projects.”

There are a lot of different things those Webelos will learn before they go on to the Arrow of Light.

“They got a pin for first aid training,” Dean said. The pin was given to them during the ceremony.

“The school nurse in Charles City Karen Landers came and trained them on CPR and first aid for cuts and shock,” Dean said.

She also taught them the heimlich maneuver.

“So they’d be able to use (those techniques) in an emergency,” Dean said.

During the ceremony, Dean announced the Friends of Scouting had raised over $1,000 for Scout activities.

In Charles City there are two Cub Scout packs and two Boy Scout troops.
