Down 5-2 through five innings, the Charles City Comets rallied for 2 runs in the sixth before tying it in the seventh to force an international tiebreaker eighth inning against West Delaware in the Class 4A Third-Place Game, Friday at the State Softball Championships. After the Comets got out of jam in the top half of the eighth with two Hawks in scoring position, junior Alex Litterer scored on a wild pitch in the Comets’ half of the inning to win the game.
Charles City also had a come-from-behind win in the bracket opener against Dallas Center-Grimes. Against North Scott in the subsequent semifinal, the Comets were up 2-0 going into the bottom of the seventh, but eventually lost a nine-inning heartbreaker.
