Immaculate Conception School is teaming up with IC Parish and its Social Justice Committee in observing International Day of Peace this Monday, Sept. 21.

A prayer service in the church begins at noon with a minute of silence. This service, led by fifth- and sixth-grade students, is open to anyone wishing to join in the prayer, with a request for social distancing and with masks and sanitizer available.

Students in primary classes created “pinwheels for peace” to be displayed during this Saturday’s Drive-Thru Fall Festival celebration and from Sept. 19-27, as part of national Campaign Nonviolence Week.

Sister Diana Blong, pastoral associate at IC Parish, explained, “As a childhood symbol, a pinwheel is a non-political reminder of a time when things were simple, peaceful and joyful. Millions of Pinwheels for Peace have been displayed worldwide for 15 years as a means of awakening the public to an awareness that ‘Peace needs to be more than just a word.'”

The United Nations theme for Day of Peace 2020 is Shaping Peace Together.

According to the United Nations website (un.org), it’s an opportunity to celebrate the day by spreading compassion, kindness and hope in the face of the pandemic.

“Stand together with the UN against attempts to use the virus to promote discrimination or hatred. Join us so that we can shape peace together,” the site says.
