Dorothy Hadley

Dorothy Hadley, 82, of Charles City, passed away Saturday, May 28, 2016 at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City after battling Alzheimer’s Disease. A funeral service for Dorothy Hadley will be held 11 a.m., Friday, June 3, at Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City with Pastor Janet Dorenkamp from Hospice of North Iowa officiating.

Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery in Charles City.

Visitation will be at Hauser Funeral Home starting at 9:30 a.m., Friday, June 3, and continues until the beginning of the service.

Dorothy Leone (Gray) Hadley, the daughter of Frank and Amanda (Howe) Gray, was born April 18, 1934 in Charles City.

She attended school in Charles City and was united in marriage to Charles Hadley in Bend, Oregon. Together they had nine children: Fred, Stephen, Janice, Sharon, Dennis, Scott, David, Judy and Jeffrey. The couple primarily made their home in Nashua, where they raised their family. Dorothy was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City, where she was baptized. She worked at Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City for several years as a Nurses’ Aide and in Central Supply.

Dorothy also volunteered at the hospital as a Pink Lady in the gift shop.

After retiring, Dorothy’s life was caring for her mother until Amanda passed away. The two were even in the same nursing home together for a short time. Dorothy enjoyed listening to music (especially Charlie Pride), reading magazines, singing, working crossword puzzles and playing the piano. She was the founding member of Sisters in Christ at 11th Street Chautauqua and enjoyed gathering with others to honor Jesus.

Living family members include her children: Stephen Gray of Floyd, Janice (Rick) Mahder of Bend, Oregon, Sharon (Jack) Grones of Zimmerman, Minn., Dennis (Gloria) Venz of Eldora, Scott (April) Hadley of Eugene, Oregon, David (Annette) Hadley of Jefferson, Judy (Kenneth) Parmeley of St. Louis, Mo., and Jeffrey (Sherry) Hadley of Charles City; 21 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two brothers: Ronald Gray of Minneapolis, Minn. and Raymond (Gerri) Gray of Littleton, Colo.; along with numerous nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charles, in 1985; son, Fred Hadley; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and daughter-in-law, Ellen Gray.
