Marilyn Vanderlan

Marilyn Vanderlan, 90, of Charles City, passed away Thursday, May 26, 2016 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City with her loving family by her side.

A funeral service for Marilyn Vanderlan will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 31, 2016 at Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City with Pastor Bill Odermann officiating.

Burial will take place at Riverside Cemetery in Charles City.

Visitation will be held at Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church from 9:30 a.m. to the start of the funeral service on Tuesday, May 31.

Marilyn Ruth Vanderlan was the fifth eldest child born to Alfred and Martha May (Cozzens) Hambly, born May 9, 1926 in Colo, Iowa. She graduated from Colo High School in Colo in 1943. She worked in Nevada, Iowa until her marriage to Vernon Vanderlan on Sept. 23, 1946 in Colo.

They celebrated 60 years of marriage together. She worked at the Oliver Corporation, Frye and McCartney Lawyers, and retired as Clerk of Court for Floyd County.

Marilyn enjoyed piecing quilts, crossword puzzles, playing bridge, and enjoying time with her friends and family.

Left to mourn her passing are her grandson Lucas (Brooke) Dix of Birmingham, Ala.; three sisters: Martha J. (Charles) Hough of Aurora, Colo., Ardeth Dorris of Blue Springs, Mo., and Jane (Dean) Heintz of Nevada; nieces and nephews: Craig (Karen) Hambly, Douglas (Ann) Hambly, Andy Hambly, Bradley Hambly, Steve (Connie) Hambly, and Carla (Bob) Anderson; many Vanderlan nieces and nephews; brothers and sisters-in-law: Wayne (Betsy) Vanderlan of Santa Cruz, Calif., Don (Sharon) Vanderlan of San Juan Capistrano, Calif., Barbara Vanderlan of Charleston, S.C.; and many dear friends.

Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents; husband Vernon in 2006; daughter Rebecca Jo in 1999; four brothers: Harlan (Geraldine), Carlton (Marjorie), Norris (Donna), and Allen Hambly; one nephew, Jim Hambly, in 2005; and her in-laws, Dale (Patricia) Vanderlan and Richard Vanderlan.

In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to the YMCA in Charles City or Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church Hauser Funeral Home, 641-228-2323, in Charles City, is in charge of local arrangements. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.hauserfh.com.
