Douglas Dean Korver, 73, died July 2, 2016 due to lung cancer in Mesa, Ariz. He grew up in Orange City, Iowa, graduated from Orange City High School, attended Northwestern College in Orange City, transferred to University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, earning a degree in lndustrial Arts and minors in Math and Physical Education and becoming a UNI Hall of Famer in football, earning the MVP of the Pecan Bowl in 1965. He was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons and later played for the Norfolk Neptunes and Omaha Mustangs. He taught school and coached football in Council Bluffs and later Charles City.

In 1964, he married Bonnie Vis. They had two children, Clinton and Juliana. In 1973, Doug and his partner Bill Wohlers formed a business called Red Line Vending, supplying and servicing video games, juke boxes and pool tables all over Northeastern Iowa for 25 years.

On Sept. 8, 1984, Doug married Carol Grant in Mason City.

They retired in 1998 and moved to Mesa, Ariz. Doug enjoyed woodworking, trap shooting, traveling, playing tennis and card games. He was a stoic pillar of strength with a great sense of humor and the heart of a lion. He loved his family and friends and will be missed by all.

Doug is survived by his loving wife Carol of 31 years; two children, Dr. Clinton D. (Miriam) Korver of Atherton, Calif., Juliana B. Korver of San Diego, Calif., and four step children, Christine (Stephen) Sortori of Chelmsford, Maryland, Theresa (Troy) Stevens of Omaha, Neb., Shawn (April) Grant of Colleyville, Texas, and Angela (Mark) Mattox of Savage, Minn.; nine grandchildren: Gavin, Allyssa, Stephanie, Serena, Madeline, Trevor, Grace, Sophia and Emerson; and three sisters: Audrey (Jerry) Scholten, of LeMars, Norma Tordoff of Columbus, Ohio, and Linda (Ken) Schumacher of Perry.

He was preceded in death by his parents Marion and Helen Korver.

A Celebration of Life will be held Nov. 13, 2016, from 1-3 p.m. at Sunland Springs Village Auditorium, 2240 S. Springwood Blvd., Mesa, Ariz. 85209.
