Charles City girls win Osage Coed T&F Invite; CC boys tie Saints for 1st

OSAGE — Several days after being caught from behind by Waverly-Shell Rock after leading the season-opening Go-Hawk Coed Track and Field Invitational through the halfway mark, the Charles City Comet girls team managed to run away from the hosting Green Devils while winning Monday’s Osage Coed Invitational.

Though Charles City had several athletes in their secondary events as opposed to their primary ones and didn’t field an individual winner, the Comet girls were able to compile 132 points — 5 points better than runner-up Osage.

The Comet girls did win several relays with the 4-by-200 foursome of Kiki Connell, Lydia Staudt, Whitney Martin and Sami Heyer with a time of 4:33.37; and the 1,600 distance medley team of Rylie Patrie, Cora Crooks, Rachel Chambers and Staudt winning with a time of 4:46.26.

On the boys side, the Comets tied Saint Ansgar with 117 points to co-lead the eight-team field.

Comet senior Ryan Zuspan recorded a personal-best leap of 20 feet, 4 ½ inches to win the long jump; and Comet senior Cole Reams won the 400 low hurdles with a time of 1:01.61.

The Comet 4-by-800 relay team of Mason Deeter, Ian Collins, Antwone Cooper and Nick Litterer won with a time of 8:42.52 — nearly 20 seconds faster than the best 4-by-800 time recorded by a Charles City relay last season.

The Charles City foursome of John Sibuma, Dylan Koresh, Cael Bohlen and Collins won the 4-by-200 relay with a time of 1:38.34.
