WAVERLY — During the first game of what was supposed to be two against Waverly-Shell Rock, several Comet slap-hitters were immediately called out by the home plate umpire for venturing out of the batter’s box and into fair territory while taking hacks at the ball.

Swings at pitches in fair territory is against the rules, but unlike the Comets, that wasn’t a problem for the Go-Hawks. Rather putting the ball in fair territory against Charles City’s resident all-state ace Sami Heyer proved to be a rare feat.

Avery Beckett’s swinging bunt, which got as far into fair territory as some of the Comet slap-hitters according to the umpire, was the only batted ball in play during Heyer’s three perfect innings of work against the Go-Hawks. The eight other hitters against her went down in flames.

With Comet sophomore Dani Reetz pitching a scoreless bottom of the fourth, the game ended with a 12-0 final.
Lightning and thunder during the subsequent intermission delayed the start of the second game before the threat of more bad weather eventually postponed it.

There was some thunder early in the first game, but that mainly came from the Comets’ bats as they sent 11 hitters to the plate and scored seven of them.

The big blast of the inning was Sadie Gebel’s 2-run homer to right field.
Batting ninth in the order, Gebel was 3 for 3 with a double and a wind-blown pop-up single.

Emma Grimm and Allie Cross each doubled for the Class 4A No. 4-ranked and undefeated Comets, who will host Cedar Falls on Wednesday at Sportsmen’s Park.
