Comets Slinger, Arndt and Reams named All-District Baseball
Press Staff Report
The Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association named its All-District Baseball Teams this week, and three Charles City Comets from the Class 3A district championship team were honored with spots on the Class 3A Northeast District Team.
They included seniors Colton Slinger and Cole Reams, and junior Tait Arndt.
For Slinger, who before his final high school baseball season signed to continue his career at Cornell College in Mount Vernon, it was his second All-District selection. Last season, he was an second-team selection. This season, he’s a first-team selection.
Slinger, an outfielder, led the Comets in hits (40) while batting .357 from the leadoff spot. With 10 walks and getting hit by 12 pitches, Slinger led the Comets with a .463 on-base percentage.
Once Slinger got on base, he didn’t stay put as he had 13 stolen bases and came around to score 25 runs.
Reams was named to the second team.
As the Comets primary catcher, Reams threw out six would-be base stealers. Reams was also the team’s most reliable relief pitcher as he led the staff with a 2.19 earned run average while holding opponents to a .185 batting average in a team-leading 48 innings.
Reams also had a record of 4-2 and led the team with four saves.
At the plate, Reams hit .346.
After leading the Comets with a .362 batting average and driving in 26 RBIs, Arndt was named to second team.
Arndt was the winning pitcher in the district championship victory over Waverly-Shell Rock, which was his fifth victory of the season which tied Elliott Sinwell for most on the staff.
Nashua-Plainfield sophomore Austin Bienemann was named to the Class 1A Northeast All-District second team.
This past season, Bienemann led the Huskies in hits (34), batting average (.415), slugging percentage (.463), stolen bases (17), runs scored (23), pitching wins (4) and pitching strikeouts (53).
