After bowling a 299 game and recording a school-record 569 two-game series, Charles City sophomore Cael Bohlen not only put himself on the Comet Bowl leaderboard for top seasonal scores, but the Iowa High School Athletic Association leaderboard as well as the series was the highest rolled in the state among high school boys. Bohlen was recently named to the Class 1A Boys All-District and All-State first teams.

After claiming a pair of third-place trophies at the State Bowling Championships last month, both the Charles City boys and girls bowling teams had representatives honored by the Iowa Girls Coaches and Association and the Iowa High School Bowling Coaches Association with placement on their All-District and All-State teams.

Comet sophomore Cael Bohlen, who led the Comets with a 223 average, was named to the Class 1A Boys All-State First Team.

Bohlen’s average placed him in the Top 10 among boy bowlers in all classes. Bohlen’s 569 series rolled this season — which included a near-perfect 299 game — was the highest two-game series this season in the state among boys.

Bohlen also placed second among individuals at the state tournament.

Senior Cade Schmidt was named to the Boys All-State Second Team after averaging better than 214 this season. Schmidt was his state-qualifier’s individual champion before placing ninth as an individual at state.

Junior Sarah Mitchell was named to the Class 1A Girls All-State Second Team after leading the Comet girls with a 179 average.

Bohlen, Schmidt and Mitchell were all All-District West First-Team selections.
Named to the All-District Boys Second Team for Charles City were seniors Noah Reams and Nathan Shultz.
Reams averaged 206 last season; Shultz averaged 203.

All four aforementioned Comet boys bowlers helped set and re-set a school dual-meet record with a latter total pinfall of 3,353 besting the former by 84 pins.

Senior Heather Viers was named to the Girls All-District West First Team after averaging 171.
Junior Brianna Ross was named to the Girls All-District West Second Team after averaging 165.

Comet head coach Doug Bohlen was named All-District West “Coach of the Year” for both boys and girls programs.
