CHARLES CITY — Trifecta, you betcha.

The Charles City wrestling team went 3-0 while hosting a varsity quadrangular meet in Comet Gym on Thursday that — for the Comets — was the first taste of competition for the season.

The Comets won convincingly over undermanned Columbus Catholic (57-21) and Dike-New Hartford (60-12), but it wasn’t until Kayden Blunt scored a major decision over Denver’s Cole Miller in the 160-pound bout with two bouts remaining that Charles City was able to clinch the victory over the Cyclones (46-29).

Charles City would have won anyway in the following match as senior Caden Collins pinned Cooper South midway through the first period of their 170-pound bout.

Collins, who is a returning state medalist for the Comets, bounced back from a 9-2 decision loss against Columbus Catholic’s Carson Hartz to start the quadrangular for the Comets, before scoring a major decision over Nick Reinicke to cap the DNH dual.

Returning state qualifier Tino Tamayo went 3-0 for the Comets in the 220-pound bracket, and 2019 state qualifier Alec Staudt recorded a pair of first-period falls in his two 132-pound matches against DNH and Denver.

Charles City 195-pounder Cade Williams was 2-0 in his matches on Thursday, and 106-pounder Kayden Kirby recorded a pair of come-from-behind fall victories over Mason Burr of Columbus Catholic and Lucas Ragsdale of DHN before getting stuck himself against Denver’s Rhett Bonnette.

Charles City’s heavyweight junior Chase Crooks recorded the fastest fall victory of the night when he stopped Denver’s Cade Bonnette just 26 seconds into their bout.

Among the four returning state qualifiers for the Comets, Crooks suffered a tough loss earlier against DNH’s Jacob Leohr. Midway through the bout, Crooks was   penalized a point for stalling when he rode Leohr out of the circle when Leohr was trying to escape from the down position.

It tied the match, and Leohr eventually won 2-1.

Several members of Charles City’s girls wrestling team, which placed second in the Iowa Coaches and Officials Girls State Wrestling Championships last season, were also in action on Thursday as part of a junior varsity/girls meet held in the old high school gym.

Senior Allie Cross — who wrestled at 152 last season — won her division, and senior Kiki Connell — who wrestled at 120 last season — placed second to Osage wrestler and former Comet Emma Grimm.
