Comet wrestlers ‘Deep-Six’ Waukon Warriors, comeback to defeat Caledonia (Minn.)

Press Staff Report

WAUKON — Like football, the most points you can score in wrestling at one time are 6.

It can be achieved either by fall victory or showing up on the mat in full gear to get your hand ceremoniously raised for a forfeit win.

Charles City’s dual against Waukon consisted entirely of 6-point outcomes with the Comets getting most of the falls and forfeits on way to a 60-24 final.

Earning fall wins for Charles City were, in meet order, sophomore Nathan Lopez at 126, freshman Talan Weber at 138, sophomore Ethan Peterson at 182, and heavyweight Chase Crooks, who pinned his opponent in 45 seconds to cap the dual.

The double-dual, hosted by the Indians, also included Caledonia from Minnesota.

Against the (Caledonia) Warriors, the Comets fell behind 26-0 before a first-period fall by 152-pound senior Kayden Blunt finally put Charles City on the board.

Comet junior Colton Crooks was able to scramble in the final seconds while hanging on to win the subsequent 160-pound match with a 2-1 decision ahead of returning state qualifiers Caden Collins and Tino Tamayo wining their respective 170-pound and 220-pound matches for the Comets with first-period falls.

With Caledonia having to forfeit at 182, 195 and heavyweight, the Comets scored 39 unanswered points on way to a 39-32 victory over the northern visitors.
