Former school board member Scott Dight received recognition for more than 20 years of service on the board at Monday’s meeting.

Dight — who said that, to be accurate, he served “20 years and two months” — was the longest-serving board member in Charles City Schools history. Former board members Robin Macomber and Lorraine Winterink talked about Dight during the public comment section of the meeting.

“I want to thank Scott for his 20 years of service and dedication to this district,” Macomber said. “Scott has given tirelessly of his time, and has always been a stickler for things being done the correct way.”

Dight announced before the election in November that this year will be his last on the board. He was first elected in 1993, and served for 12 years, until 2005.

“During that time we had a lot of declining enrollment, budget problems and budget cuts,” Dight said. “It was a rather difficult period in the school district’s history.”

After an 8-year hiatus, Dight ran as a write-in candidate in 2013 and was elected again, and has served until now.

“In the last eight years, we’ve accomplished a lot of positive things,” he said.

Winterink listed off the accomplishments Dight played a roll in, which included building the new middle school, the new bus barn, adding soccer and bowling as extra-curricular activities, Iowa BIG North, the new athletic complex and implementing project-based learning.

Winterink said Dight also played a key role in the sale of the North Grand Building, currently being repurposed into apartments.

“Thanks for the memories, Scott,” Winterink said. “We’ve had a lot of fun, and we’ve gotten a lot of work done.”

“Thank you Scott for your time, your dedication, your passion and for your love,” Macomber added. “I know if Scott gave blood, he’d bleed Orange.”
