John ‘Jack’ Charles Stevens
John “Jack” Charles Stevens, 90, passed away on Nov. 23, 2020 of natural causes.
A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 27, 2020 at Calvary Cemetery in Charles City. Those attending will be asked to follow social distancing guidelines and to please wear a face covering; thank you for your understanding.
Jack was born on March 11th, 1930 to James and Lauretta Stevens in Boyd, MN. When he was a young boy his family moved to Estherville, IA. He graduated from Estherville High School in 1949 where he earned the nickname of “Jack Rabbit” due to his speed and achievements on the football field. During high school he joined the National Guard ROTC and was stationed at Fort McCoy in Sparta, Wisconsin where he served stateside during the Korean War.
On Aug. 31, 1950, he married his high school sweetheart Patricia Sullivan at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Estherville. During their first years of marriage they resided in Estherville and had their only daughter Jackie. They moved to Charles City in 1958 where they continued to raise Jackie and live a joyful, blessed life. He was employed by Salisbury until he retired after 30 plus years. Jack lived a humble life believing that hard work, respecting others, serving the Lord and kindness are how greatness is measured.
Jack enjoyed spending time with his family playing cards while having a drink and laughing about all the fun times. He also enjoyed spending time with his good friends Dale, Norma, Bruce and Jolene. Jack had a special bond with his two granddaughters and to them he was like a father.
Jack was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, where he participated in the funeral choir and as an usher. As part of his favorite hobbies, he was also a member of New Hampton RC Crossed Signals Airplane Club and Academy of Model Aeronautics.
Jack is survived by his daughter, Jackie; two granddaughters, Jennifer Gade and Teresa Paulsen, both of Waterloo; a great granddaughter, Addison Paulsen and a great grandson, Cooper Paulsen; two brothers, Merlin (Suzanne) of Pacific Junction, IA and Donald (Elsa) of Poplarville, MS; two sisters, LuCretia (Dennis) of Wellston, MI and Ruth (Butch) of Estherville.
He was preceded in death by his lifelong love, Pat, his parents, two brothers, a sister and many friends.
