School’s out for summer

By James Grob, jgrob@charlescitypress.com

Students were welcomed to Charles City High School with high-fives, handshakes and even a few hugs Wednesday morning as Principal Joshua Johnson and Associate Principal Larry Wolfe greeted kids outside the front doors, in a light drizzle, on what was to be the last day of the 2017-18 school year.

Meanwhile, over at the middle school, physical education instructor Rusty Rogotzke had the appropriate headgear on for the rainy conditions, as he greeted students with high-five opportunities and an enthusiastic “happy last day of school” for each and every student dropped off.

Middle school students started the day off with an assembly, followed by eighth-grade “moving up” ceremonies. High school students, on the other hand, might have needed that hug, because most of them would spend their last day of class completing final exams.

Students throughout the Charles City School district were dismissed before noon on Wednesday and released from academic captivity until August, while teachers and administrators still have about a week of work left before they can experience the freedom of summer.
